The traditional festival of Pongal, marks the end of winter elevation, and the beginning of another six-month-long journey of the sun in the northwards direction that is when the sun enters the 10th House of Capricorn Zodiac, also known as Uttarayana.

The day celebrated with family and friends and a sweet rice dish prepared as the main Pongal dish in a traditional earthen pot in an open space in the sight of the sun. The pot typically decorated with flower garland, and two or more tall fresh sugarcane stalks placed near the cooking stove.
Mattu Pongal is celebrated as the third day festival of pongal to worship the cows and seek blessings.
